Melatonin vs regular sleeping tablets

The hormone melatonin is naturally produced in the human body during sleep. It helps regulate sleep cycles and has a calming effect on the body. Regular sleeping tablets are chemically induced to induce sleepiness and are prescribed by doctors for short-term use only.

I myself quit regular sleeping pills because it made me feel groggy in the morning and also not that much effect. To me melatonin has been great, and although not recommended to use it for longer periods I have used it regularly for the past years with the least side-effects of any tried sleeping medications.

Most common sleeping medications?

The most common sleeping pills are benzodiazepines, barbiturates, and non-benzodiazepine sedatives.

Benzodiazepines are a class of drugs that are commonly used to treat anxiety and sleep disorders. They have been in use for more than 50 years now. Benzodiazepines are also used as muscle relaxants, seizure medications and anticonvulsants. Barbiturates are also a type of sedative which is often used to treat insomnia. Non-benzodiazepine sedatives include zolpidem (Ambien) and eszopiclone (Lunesta). These drugs work by slowing down the activity of the brain which leads to sleepiness.

I have tried these and I do recommend all of you to stay away from it if possible. You do definitely fall asleep quick but it damages your sleep. And it has a high risk of becoming dependent and addicted on the medication/drug/substance.

The effects of these medications on sleeping patterns is often debated among people who use them – some say they cause sleeping problems, while others claim they do not affect sleep.

does melotonin damage your sleep?

Short answer, yes. At least according to experts within the field, but compared to alternative sleeping medications. A lot less. The biggest risk for melotonin is that after awhile, especially on higher doses.

TRY EVERYTHING

Although I am an advocate for using available medications when necessary, I do believe one should try everything before. Such as:

If you are having trouble sleeping, it is important to understand what is causing your insomnia. If you are taking a prescription medication, talk with your doctor about the side effects.

If you have been diagnosed with a sleep disorder, talk to your doctor about treatments or other therapies that may help.

If you are drinking caffeine late in the day, try cutting back on it or avoid all together.
